third semester kickoff

I'll be starting my third semester this week in my Master of Software Engineering program. I'll be taking Software Systems Development and Software Design and Implementation. So, here starts another 14 weeks of homework and occasionally a blog post on what I'm learning :)

These classes seem like the perfect venue to answer the age old software engineering question: convention or configuration? The Ruby camp (and now others such as Grails) think the former is best since it allows for a lot of automatic code generation that gets software projects up and running quickly. Personally, I think configuration is extraordinarily painful, but being explicit is just part of the methodical mindset necessary for building quality software. What have your classes taught you?
